Plant Highlights: Soft creamy flowers • Flowers in its first year • Compact upright habit • Excellent for pollinators • Ideal for borders and containers
Overview
Digitalis purpurea 'Dalmatian Cream' is a compact foxglove from the early-flowering Dalmatian Series, valued for producing elegant spires of soft creamy bell-shaped flowers with delicately speckled purple throats. Flowering from late spring into summer, it brings strong vertical interest to borders while attracting bees and other pollinating insects.
Unlike many traditional foxgloves, this cultivar is bred to flower in its first year from an early planting. Its tidy, upright habit makes it an excellent choice for smaller gardens, patio containers and mixed perennial borders. At maturity it typically reaches 50–80cm in height with a spread of approximately 30–45cm.
Why We Love It
- Flowers earlier than many traditional foxgloves.
- Elegant creamy flower spikes brighten mixed borders.
- Compact habit is ideal for smaller gardens and containers.
- Highly attractive to bees and other pollinating insects.
- Excellent for adding height and vertical structure to planting schemes.

Growing Guide
Position
Plant in full sun or partial shade in a sheltered position for the best flowering performance.
Watering
Water regularly while establishing and during prolonged dry spells. Keep the soil evenly moist, particularly during active growth, while avoiding prolonged waterlogging.
Soil
Grow in fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Avoid soils that remain wet during winter.
Hardiness and Winter Care
Fully hardy in Ireland and the UK (RHS H6). Plants tolerate normal winter conditions well. Remove old flower stems after flowering and allow the crown to overwinter naturally before fresh growth appears in spring.
Maintenance
Remove spent flower spikes after flowering to maintain a tidy appearance. Leaving some flower spikes to set seed may encourage natural self-seeding where conditions are favourable.
