Growing Guide

Position Plant in partial shade or a sheltered sunny position, protected from strong winds. In Irish gardens, a location sheltered from harsh afternoon sun and drying winds helps keep the delicate foliage looking its best.
Watering Water regularly while establishing and during prolonged dry periods. Container-grown plants should be checked frequently during warm weather to prevent compost from drying out completely.
Soil Grow in fertile, humus-rich soil that retains moisture while draining freely. Incorporating organic matter before planting helps maintain even soil moisture.
Pruning Very little pruning is required. Remove any dead, damaged or crossing branches during late autumn or winter while the tree is dormant.

Perfect For

  • Japanese-inspired gardens
  • Woodland planting
  • Feature containers
  • Courtyard gardens
  • Sheltered borders

Good to Know

  • Japanese maples are prized for their seasonal foliage displays rather than flowers.
  • Providing a sheltered position with consistent soil moisture helps maintain healthy leaf colour and reduces the risk of leaf scorch during warm, dry weather.
