Plant Highlights: Bright golden evergreen foliage • Neat arching habit • Excellent for moist soils and pond edges • Year-round colour • Ideal for containers and borders

Overview

Acorus gramineus 'Ogon', commonly known as Japanese Sweet Flag, is a compact evergreen grass-like perennial prized for its vibrant golden-yellow foliage. Its slender, arching leaves form dense clumps that bring year-round colour and texture to borders, water features and container displays, brightening even lightly shaded areas.

Thriving in consistently moist conditions, 'Ogon' is particularly effective around ponds, streams and bog gardens, while also performing well in borders and decorative containers where the soil does not dry out completely. Its elegant foliage provides a striking contrast to flowering perennials and other foliage plants throughout the seasons.

Growing Guide

Position

Grow in full sun or partial shade. Foliage colour is often brightest with a little sunshine, while partial shade is beneficial in warmer locations. Ideal beside ponds, streams or in consistently moist borders.

Watering

Keep the soil consistently moist, particularly during dry weather and while plants establish. Unlike many ornamental grasses, Acorus does not tolerate prolonged dry conditions.

Soil

Plant in fertile, humus-rich soil that remains evenly moist. It thrives in bog gardens and around pond margins and adapts well to containers provided the compost is kept from drying out.

Hardiness and Winter Care

Fully hardy throughout Ireland. Remove any damaged or tired foliage in late winter or early spring before fresh growth emerges. Divide congested clumps every few years to maintain vigour.

Routine Care

Requires very little maintenance. Trim away any dead or weathered leaves in spring and divide mature clumps if they become overcrowded.

Perfect For

  • Pond margins and water gardens.
  • Bog gardens and damp borders.
  • Containers with consistently moist compost.
  • Woodland-style planting.
  • Adding evergreen colour and texture to mixed borders.

Good to Know

Although often used around water features, Acorus gramineus 'Ogon' is not a true ornamental grass but a grass-like perennial. It performs best where the soil remains consistently moist and should not be allowed to dry out for extended periods.
