Agapanthus ‘Poppin Star’

5 Litre Pot – Approximately 80cm

Plant Highlights: Long summer flower display • Blue spherical flower heads • Architectural foliage • Suitable for borders and containers

Overview

Agapanthus ‘Poppin Star’ is a striking African lily valued for its upright flower stems, rounded clusters of blue flowers and clump-forming foliage. The bold flower heads rise above strap-like leaves in summer, bringing height and structure to sunny borders, gravel gardens and patio containers.

Its architectural shape makes it particularly useful where a planting scheme needs vertical interest without taking up a large amount of space. The evergreen foliage provides structure beyond the flowering season, while the summer blooms create a strong focal point in warm, sheltered positions.

Why We Love It

  • Tall flower stems create a strong summer display
  • Blue flower heads add cool-toned colour to planting schemes
  • Evergreen foliage provides year-round structure
  • Suitable for containers and sunny borders
  • Architectural form works well in modern and gravel-style gardens

Growing Guide

Position

Choose a sunny position for the best flowering performance. Agapanthus can tolerate some light shade, but flowering may be reduced where light levels are limited. A sheltered spot can help protect foliage and flowers in exposed Irish gardens.

Watering

Water regularly while the plant establishes. Once established in the ground, Agapanthus usually only needs additional water during prolonged dry periods. Container-grown plants should be checked more often, especially during warmer weather.

Soil

Plant in fertile, well-drained soil. Good drainage is especially important through wet Irish winters, as Agapanthus dislikes sitting in waterlogged conditions. For containers, use a free-draining compost.

Routine Care

Remove faded flower stems after flowering to keep the plant tidy and maintain the foliage display. In colder or exposed locations, protect container-grown plants during severe winter weather.

Seasonal Interest

The main display arrives in summer when tall stems carry rounded clusters of flowers above the foliage. Once flowering has finished, the evergreen leaves continue to provide structure and texture in the garden.

Good to Know

Agapanthus generally flowers best when grown in a sunny position and allowed to become well established. Good winter drainage is one of the most important factors for reliable performance in Irish gardens.
