LV15 Container

Plant Highlights: Elegant pure white flower heads • Upright architectural habit • Long-lasting summer display • Excellent for borders, containers and cut flowers • Attractive to pollinating insects

Overview

Agapanthus umbellatus 'Albus' is a classic African Lily, producing large rounded heads of pure white, trumpet-shaped flowers held on strong, upright stems above graceful clumps of strap-shaped green foliage. Flowering throughout summer, it brings brightness and structure to borders while complementing both traditional and contemporary planting schemes.

Its elegant flower heads create a striking contrast with surrounding foliage and combine beautifully with ornamental grasses and other summer-flowering perennials. The blooms are also long-lasting when cut, making them an excellent choice for floral arrangements. At maturity, plants typically reach 1–1.2m in height with a spread of approximately 50–60cm.

Growing Guide

Position

Plant in a sunny, sheltered position in fertile, well-drained soil. Agapanthus flowers most freely in full sun and benefits from a site that remains free-draining throughout winter.

Watering

Water regularly while establishing and during extended dry periods, especially when grown in containers. Avoid prolonged waterlogging.

Soil

Grow in fertile, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Agapanthus also performs well in large containers filled with a free-draining compost.

Hardiness and Winter Care

Container-grown plants benefit from winter protection in colder or more exposed parts of Ireland. Ensure good drainage throughout winter and protect containers from prolonged frost where necessary.

Maintenance

Remove spent flower stems once flowering has finished to keep the plant tidy. Leave the foliage until it naturally dies back, removing only damaged leaves in spring. Feed during the growing season with a balanced fertiliser to encourage vigorous growth and abundant flowering.

Perfect For

  • Sunny herbaceous borders.
  • Patio containers.
  • Gravel gardens.
  • Coastal gardens.

Good to Know
