Plant Highlights: Rounded heads of blue flowers • Upright architectural habit • Long-lasting summer display • Excellent for borders, containers and cut flowers

Overview

Agapanthus umbellatus 'Ovatus' is a handsome African Lily grown for its elegant rounded flower heads, carried on sturdy upright stems above clumps of strap-shaped green foliage. Flowering throughout summer, it adds height, structure and vibrant colour to borders while blending beautifully with both contemporary and traditional planting schemes.

Its architectural form makes it an excellent feature plant in sunny borders, gravel gardens and large patio containers. The long-lasting blooms are also ideal for cutting, bringing colour and elegance indoors.

Growing Guide

Plant in a sunny, sheltered position in fertile, well-drained soil. Agapanthus performs best in full sun and benefits from a site where the soil drains freely, particularly during winter.

Water regularly during the establishment period and during prolonged dry spells, especially for container-grown plants. Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring and during the growing season to encourage healthy growth and abundant flowering.

Wildlife

The nectar-rich flowers attract bees and other pollinating insects, making this an excellent addition to wildlife-friendly gardens.

Seasonal Care

Remove spent flower stems once flowering has finished to keep the plant tidy. Leave the foliage until it naturally dies back, removing only damaged or dead leaves in spring. In colder or more exposed parts of Ireland, container-grown plants benefit from winter protection.
