Plant Highlights: Tall summer flower spikes • Mixed flower colours • Cottage garden character • Vertical border interest
Overview
Alcea rosea Mix, commonly known as hollyhock, is a traditional cottage garden perennial valued for its tall flower spikes and colourful summer display. The mixed selection brings together a range of flower colours, creating a varied display that works particularly well at the back of borders, against walls and fences, or among informal planting schemes.
The upright growth habit adds height and structure, while the large blooms provide a strong seasonal focal point. Hollyhocks are especially suited to sunny positions where their tall stems can be appreciated as part of a layered border design.
Why We Love It
- Tall flower spikes add height to planting schemes
- Mixed colours create an informal summer display
- Classic cottage garden character
- Useful for borders, walls and fences

Growing Guide
Position
Choose a sunny position with space for the tall flower stems to develop. A sheltered location near a wall, fence or other planting can help protect the stems from strong winds.
Watering
Water regularly while establishing, especially during dry spells. Once settled, water when conditions are particularly dry, with container-grown plants needing closer attention as compost can dry out more quickly.
Soil
Plant in fertile soil that retains some moisture while draining freely. Good drainage is important through wet Irish winters, particularly in heavier soils.
Routine Care
Tall stems may benefit from support in exposed locations. Remove faded flower stems after flowering to keep the plant tidy and encourage a longer display where suitable.
Good to Know
This is a mixed selection, so flower colours and individual growth characteristics vary across the current range. The changing mix of colours gives each planting scheme a slightly different character.
