Position in bright, indirect light. Gentle morning sun may be tolerated, but strong afternoon sunshine can scorch the foliage and reduce its rich colouring.
Water thoroughly when the top layer of compost begins to dry, allowing excess water to drain away. Keep the compost evenly moist during active growth, but never allow the plant to sit in water as the roots are sensitive to waterlogging.
Use a loose, free-draining houseplant compost rich in organic matter. A mix containing bark, perlite or similar coarse materials helps provide the aeration Alocasias prefer.
This plant performs best in warm, humid conditions. A bright bathroom or conservatory with good natural light can be ideal. Keep it away from radiators, cold draughts and sudden temperature changes.
Feed every two to four weeks with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser during spring and summer. Reduce feeding during autumn and winter as growth naturally slows.
Remove yellowing or damaged leaves at the base to keep the plant tidy. Wipe the foliage gently with a soft, damp cloth to remove dust and maintain its distinctive velvety appearance. Repot only when the roots begin to fill the pot.
Bright living rooms with indirect light.
Well-lit bathrooms with naturally high humidity.
Warm conservatories.
Tropical indoor plant collections.
Shelves or tabletops where the dramatic foliage can be appreciated.
'Alocasia 'Antoro Velvet'' is a collector's foliage plant prized for its leaf texture rather than its flowers. It may grow more slowly during the darker winter months, and occasional loss of an older leaf as new growth develops is a normal part of its growth cycle.
