Alocasia micholitziana 'Frydek', often known as the Green Velvet Alocasia, is grown for its dramatic foliage rather than its flowers. Each arrow-shaped leaf has a rich, velvety texture with bold white veins that create a striking contrast, making this one of the most distinctive foliage houseplants available.

Its upright, compact habit makes it an excellent choice for shelves, plant stands and tabletops where its foliage can be appreciated up close. Given the right conditions, it produces a succession of new leaves throughout the growing season, each unfurling with impressive detail.

Indoor Placement

Place in bright, indirect light away from strong midday sun, which can scorch the leaves. A warm room with consistent temperatures and good humidity will help maintain healthy growth. Kitchens and naturally bright bathrooms can be excellent locations if they receive sufficient natural light.

Avoid positioning the plant near cold draughts, radiators or frequently opened exterior doors, as sudden temperature changes may stress the foliage.

Growing Guide

Keep the compost lightly moist during active growth, allowing the surface to dry slightly before watering again. Reduce watering during the cooler months when growth naturally slows. Ensure excess water drains freely, as Alocasias dislike sitting in wet compost.

Feed with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser during the growing season to encourage healthy new leaves.

Good to Know

Like many Alocasias, 'Frydek' may slow its growth or shed some leaves during the darker winter months. With warmth, bright light and appropriate watering, fresh growth usually resumes as conditions improve.
