Alocasias are attractive foliage houseplants, ideal for creating a tropical look. Their leaves are often large, glossy and eye-catching, with the veins making bold patterns. The large leaves can be green, purple or silver and heart-shaped or arrow-shaped, often with prominent veins. Some species can grow very large, up to 1.5m (5ft) tall, but there are plenty of smaller and still very striking options too.

Supplied in a 19cm pot, heights/colour/leaf-shape vary depending on variety. Typically approx 2 foot.

• Foliage: Upright stems with a triangular leaf at the top
• Height: 1-5 foot
• Best placement: Humid, warm spot away from direct sun
• Care requirements: In spring/summer keep the soil moist, and keep well fed. In winter allow the soil to mostly dry out before watering again. Keeping them warm is essential. Humidity is quite important for some varieties.
