Aloe arborescens – Tree Aloe – Supplied in a P12 Pot

Plant Highlights: Architectural succulent with branching growth • Attractive blue-green fleshy leaves • Low water requirements once established • Excellent for bright indoor spaces • Easy to grow in free-draining compost

Overview

Aloe arborescens, commonly known as Tree Aloe, is a striking evergreen succulent valued for its upright, branching habit and rosettes of long, blue-green fleshy leaves with finely toothed margins. Unlike the more familiar Aloe vera, this species develops multiple stems over time, creating an impressive architectural plant with a naturally sculptural appearance.

When grown indoors, it makes an eye-catching feature in bright rooms, conservatories and sunrooms. In ideal conditions, mature plants may produce tall spikes of vibrant orange-red flowers, although flowering indoors is less common than in outdoor Mediterranean climates.

Indoor Placement

Position in a bright location with plenty of natural light. It will tolerate several hours of gentle direct sun, making an east- or south-facing windowsill an ideal position. Avoid dark corners, as insufficient light can lead to weak, stretched growth.

Allow the compost to dry out between waterings and always ensure excess water drains away freely. Reduce watering during the winter months when the plant is growing more slowly.

Good to Know

Tree Aloe stores water in its thick leaves, making it well adapted to occasional dry spells. Overwatering is far more likely to cause problems than allowing the compost to become slightly dry. Use a pot with drainage holes and avoid leaving the plant standing in water.
