Anemone hupehensis 'Emmy Deep Rose' – Supplied in a 3-Litre Pot

Plant Highlights: Deep rose-pink flowers • Compact, bushy growth • Colour from late summer into autumn • Suitable for borders and containers • Useful for cut-flower arrangements

Overview

Anemone hupehensis 'Emmy Deep Rose' is a compact Japanese anemone with cupped, deep rose-pink flowers centred by prominent yellow stamens. The blooms rise above lobed, dark green foliage from late summer into autumn, extending border colour as many earlier perennials begin to fade.

Its bushy habit is easier to place than many taller Japanese anemones. Grow it through the front or middle of a mixed border, among ornamental grasses and other late-flowering perennials, or in a generous patio container.

Growing Guide

Plant in fertile soil that retains moisture while draining freely. Partial shade is a particularly useful position, although the plant can grow in full sun where the soil does not dry out for long periods.

Water regularly while the roots establish. During dry or windy weather, check container-grown plants more frequently and water when the upper layer of compost begins to dry. Avoid sites that remain saturated through winter.

Apply a layer of organic mulch in spring to conserve moisture, keeping it clear of the crown.

Seasonal Care

Remove faded flower stems after the display has finished, or leave them temporarily for autumn structure. Cut the remaining old growth back near ground level before fresh shoots emerge in spring.

Japanese anemones develop spreading underground roots and may gradually form a wider patch once established. Divide or remove unwanted shoots in spring or autumn when control is needed.

Good to Know

Choose the planting position carefully, as established Japanese anemones generally perform best when left undisturbed. The slender stems are sturdy but will benefit from shelter in gardens exposed to persistent strong winds.
