Overview

Aporocactus varieties, commonly known as rat tail cactus, are distinctive indoor plants grown for their long, trailing stems and unusual cascading habit. Growing Guide

Light

Place in a bright position with plenty of natural light. A bright windowsill or conservatory can suit this cactus well, though strong summer sun through glass may need to be moderated if the stems show signs of scorching.

Watering

Allow the compost to dry between waterings. During the active growing season, water thoroughly and then allow excess water to drain away. Reduce watering during darker winter months when growth slows.

Compost and Feeding

Use a free-draining cactus or succulent compost to prevent excess moisture around the roots. Feed occasionally during active growth with a suitable cactus fertiliser, following the product instructions.

Routine Care

Allow the trailing stems to develop naturally, or gently reposition the plant to maintain an even display. Avoid frequent handling, as the stems can be delicate.

Indoor Placement

Aporocactus is well suited to a bright living room, home office or conservatory where its cascading stems can be displayed clearly. It needs more light than many leafy houseplants, so avoid dark corners or areas without natural daylight.
