Growing Guide

Position Choose a sunny position for the best flowering and fruit production. Apple trees benefit from good air circulation and should be planted where they receive plenty of daylight throughout the growing season.
Watering Water regularly after planting until the roots are established. During dry spells, water deeply rather than little and often, especially while the tree is young. Container-grown trees need closer monitoring as compost can dry out more quickly.
Soil Plant in fertile soil that retains moisture while draining freely. Good drainage is important, particularly through wet Irish winters, as fruit trees perform poorly in waterlogged ground.
Feeding Apply a suitable fruit-tree fertiliser in spring to support healthy growth and fruit development. Mulching around the base can help conserve moisture and improve soil conditions, while keeping mulch away from direct contact with the trunk.
Pruning Prune according to the tree’s form and growth habit, usually during the dormant season for established apple trees. Remove damaged, crossing or overcrowded branches to maintain an open structure that allows light and air movement.
Harvesting ‘Elstar’ is grown for its crisp dessert apples, typically harvested in early autumn when the fruit has developed good colour and flavour. Apples are best picked when mature and can be stored appropriately after harvest.
