  • Excellent ground cover for sunny sites

  • Ideal for rockeries, walls and gravel gardens

  • Low maintenance and drought tolerant once established

Overview

Arabis caucasica 'Arctic Joy', commonly known as Rock Cress, is a compact evergreen alpine that produces a profusion of crisp white flowers in early to mid-spring. The blooms almost cover the neat cushions of grey-green foliage, creating a bright display that cascades attractively over walls, raised beds and the edges of rockeries.

Its spreading, mat-forming habit makes it an excellent choice for filling gaps between paving, softening the front of sunny borders and providing long-lasting evergreen ground cover. Once established, it thrives in free-draining soils and requires very little maintenance.

Why We Love It

  • Evergreen foliage provides year-round structure.

  • Ideal for rockeries, alpine gardens and retaining walls.

Growing Guide

Position

Plant in a sunny, open position for the best flowering. It performs exceptionally well in rockeries, gravel gardens, raised beds and along the edges of walls where drainage is excellent.

Watering

Water regularly during establishment. Once established, plants become drought tolerant and require only occasional watering during prolonged dry periods. Container-grown plants should be monitored more frequently.

Soil

Grow in well-drained soil. Sandy, gravelly or stony soils are ideal, and incorporating horticultural grit into heavier ground will improve drainage and help maintain healthy growth.

Hardiness and Winter Care

Fully hardy throughout Ireland. Good drainage during winter is important to protect the evergreen foliage and crown from prolonged wet conditions.

Routine Care

Lightly trim the plant after flowering to encourage a neat, compact habit and remove any faded flower stems. Divide mature clumps every few years if required to rejuvenate growth.

Perfect For

  • Rockeries and alpine gardens.

  • Gravel gardens.

  • Retaining walls and raised beds.

  • Front of sunny borders.

  • Ground cover in well-drained areas.

Good to Know
