Overview

Arabis ferdinandi-coburgii 'Old Gold' is a colourful evergreen alpine prized for its bright variegated foliage and cheerful spring flowers. The small, glossy green leaves are edged with golden-yellow, providing year-round colour and texture, while in spring the foliage is covered with clusters of crisp white flowers that create a striking contrast.

Its naturally low-growing, spreading habit makes it an excellent choice for rockeries, alpine beds, gravel gardens and the front of sunny borders. It also cascades attractively over retaining walls and the edges of containers, where the evergreen foliage provides lasting interest throughout the year.

Growing Guide

Position

Plant in a sunny, open position for the best foliage colour and flowering. It thrives in rockeries, gravel gardens, raised beds and alpine troughs where drainage is excellent.

Watering

Water regularly during establishment. Once established, plants become drought tolerant and require only occasional watering during extended dry periods. Container-grown specimens may need more frequent watering in warm weather.

Soil

Grow in free-draining soil. Sandy, gravelly or stony soils are ideal, and adding horticultural grit to heavier ground will improve drainage and help prevent winter wet.

Hardiness and Winter Care

Fully hardy throughout Ireland. Good drainage is essential during winter to maintain healthy evergreen foliage and prevent crown rot.

Routine Care

Trim lightly after flowering to keep the plant compact and tidy. Remove any damaged foliage as required and divide mature clumps every few years if they become congested.

Perfect For

  • Rockeries and alpine gardens.

  • Gravel and Mediterranean-style planting.

  • Front of sunny borders.

  • Walls, raised beds and alpine troughs.

  • Patio containers and edging paths.

Good to Know

'Old Gold' is grown as much for its attractive evergreen variegated foliage as for its spring flowers, making it an excellent choice where year-round ground cover and foliage colour are required.
