Dypsis lutescens (Areca Palm) – supplied in a P17 pot

Plant Highlights: Graceful arching feather-like fronds • Elegant clump-forming palm • Adds a tropical feel to bright interiors • Well suited to warm, humid rooms

Overview

Dypsis lutescens, commonly known as the Areca Palm, is one of the most popular indoor palms, valued for its elegant, arching fronds and naturally graceful, multi-stemmed habit. Its finely divided, fresh green foliage creates a soft, airy appearance that complements both contemporary and traditional interiors.

The Areca Palm makes an excellent feature plant for living rooms, offices and bright hallways, while also thriving in naturally humid spaces such as bathrooms with good natural light. As it matures, it develops into a full, leafy specimen that provides year-round greenery.

Indoor Placement

Position in bright, indirect light, avoiding prolonged strong midday sunshine, which may scorch the fronds. A warm room with consistent temperatures is ideal. Bright bathrooms and kitchens with natural light provide excellent humidity, helping to keep the foliage looking its best.

Keep away from cold draughts, radiators and air conditioning units, as dry air can cause the leaf tips to brown.

Growing Guide

Water thoroughly when the surface of the compost begins to dry, allowing excess water to drain away freely. Avoid leaving the roots sitting in water. During the growing season, feed monthly with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser to encourage healthy new growth.

Occasionally mist the foliage or increase humidity where indoor air is particularly dry. Remove any old or damaged fronds by cutting them cleanly at the base.

Good to Know

The Areca Palm grows from multiple stems, producing fresh fronds from the centre of the clump. Rotate the pot every few weeks to encourage even growth and maintain a balanced shape.
