Overview
Asplenium antiquum, commonly known as the Japanese Bird's Nest Fern, is an attractive evergreen houseplant grown for its fresh green, arching fronds that emerge from a central rosette. Unlike many finely divided ferns, its broad, gently rippled fronds create a bold, architectural look while maintaining a soft, natural appearance.
Its tidy, upright habit makes it an excellent choice for shelves, side tables and plant stands, where its lush foliage brings a calming touch to bright indoor spaces. It thrives in the warm, humid conditions found in many homes, particularly bathrooms with natural light.

Growing Guide
Position in bright, indirect light or partial shade, avoiding prolonged direct sunlight, which can scorch the fronds. Keep the compost evenly moist but not waterlogged, allowing the surface to begin drying slightly before watering again.
This fern appreciates higher humidity, making it well suited to bathrooms or kitchens with natural light. Avoid pouring water directly into the centre of the rosette, as this can encourage rot. Feed occasionally during the growing season with a diluted houseplant fertiliser.
Indoor Placement
Asplenium antiquum is ideal for bathrooms, living rooms, home offices and other warm indoor spaces with good natural light. Keep it away from radiators, heating vents and cold draughts to help maintain healthy foliage.
Why We Love It
The broad, glossy fronds provide a fresh, tropical feel without becoming overly large or difficult to manage. Its simple yet architectural form works equally well as a standalone feature or alongside other foliage houseplants.
