Growing Guide
Position
Choose a partially shaded position for the best performance. Astilbes appreciate protection from strong afternoon sun, especially where the soil may dry out. They are well suited to sheltered borders, woodland-style gardens and areas with consistent moisture.
Watering
Keep the soil evenly moist, particularly during warm or dry periods. Astilbes do not cope well with drought stress, so container-grown plants and newly planted specimens need regular checking during dry weather.
Soil
Plant in fertile, moisture-retentive soil that still drains freely. Adding organic matter can help improve soil structure and moisture retention, particularly in lighter soils.
Routine Care
Remove faded flower stems after flowering if desired to maintain a tidy appearance. Cut back the old foliage in late autumn or winter once it has died back naturally, allowing fresh growth to emerge in spring.
