About this product

Astilbe simplicifolia 'Sprite' – Supplied in a 2-Litre Pot

Plant Highlights: Soft shell-pink flower plumes • Compact, low-growing habit • Attractive finely divided bronze-green foliage • Excellent for shaded borders and containers • Ideal for moist soils

Overview

Astilbe simplicifolia 'Sprite' is a charming dwarf astilbe, producing graceful, arching plumes of soft shell-pink flowers above delicate bronze-green foliage during summer. Its compact, spreading habit makes it particularly suitable for the front of borders, woodland gardens and patio containers, where it adds colour and texture without overwhelming neighbouring plants.

Smaller than many other astilbe varieties, 'Sprite' is an excellent choice for edging paths, planting beneath deciduous trees or combining with hostas, ferns and heucheras in moisture-retentive, partially shaded areas.

Growing Guide

Plant in fertile, humus-rich soil that retains moisture without becoming waterlogged. It performs best in partial shade, although it can also be grown in full sun where the soil remains consistently moist. Water regularly during dry periods, particularly while establishing and when grown in containers.

Apply a mulch of organic matter each spring to help conserve moisture and improve soil structure.

Wildlife

The delicate flowers attract bees and other pollinating insects, adding value to wildlife-friendly planting schemes.

Pruning

Remove spent flower stems after flowering, or leave them in place for late-season interest. Cut old foliage back to ground level in late winter or early spring before fresh growth appears.
