Athyrium niponicum 'Metallicum' – supplied in a 2-litre pot

Plant Highlights: Distinctive silver-grey fronds with burgundy highlights • Elegant deciduous fern for shady gardens • Adds texture throughout the growing season • Ideal for woodland planting and shaded borders

Overview

Athyrium niponicum 'Metallicum', commonly known as the Japanese Painted Fern, is a striking deciduous fern valued for its finely divided fronds, which display shimmering silver-grey tones with contrasting burgundy-purple stems and central markings. Its refined colouring brings light and texture to shaded areas where many flowering plants struggle.

Growing in graceful clumps, this fern combines beautifully with Hostas, Heucheras, Astilbes and other woodland perennials. It is equally at home in shaded borders, woodland gardens and containers, where its distinctive foliage provides interest from spring until autumn.

Note: Although listed in the Indoor Plants category, Athyrium niponicum 'Metallicum' is an outdoor hardy garden fern and is best grown outside.

Growing Guide

Plant in a sheltered position with partial or full shade in fertile, humus-rich soil that remains consistently moist without becoming waterlogged. Incorporating organic matter before planting will help retain moisture and improve soil structure.

Water regularly while establishing and during prolonged dry spells, particularly in lighter soils. Applying a mulch of leaf mould or garden compost each spring will help conserve moisture and encourage healthy growth.

Perfect For

  • Woodland gardens
  • Shaded borders
  • Underplanting shrubs
  • Courtyard gardens
  • Moist, sheltered planting areas
  • Containers in shaded positions

Seasonal Care

Allow the fronds to die back naturally in autumn before removing them in late winter or early spring. Fresh fronds emerge from the crown each spring. Maintain even soil moisture during the growing season for the best foliage colour.
