Rhododendron (Japanese Azalea Group)

5 Litre Pot

Plant Highlights: Spectacular spring flowers • Compact evergreen shrub • Ideal for containers and woodland planting • Thrives in acidic soil

Overview

Rhododendron (Japanese Azalea Group), commonly known as Japanese Azalea, is a compact evergreen shrub grown for its abundant spring display of vibrant funnel-shaped flowers. This product may include a range of cultivars, so flower colour can vary, but all share a naturally neat habit and attractive evergreen foliage that provides year-round structure.

Its compact size makes it an excellent choice for borders, woodland gardens, Japanese-inspired planting schemes and patio containers. Japanese Azaleas combine particularly well with camellias, pieris and other acid-loving shrubs, creating colourful spring displays in sheltered gardens.

Growing Guide

Position

Plant in partial shade or a position with morning sun and afternoon shade. A sheltered location helps protect both flowers and evergreen foliage from drying winds.

Watering

Keep the soil consistently moist during establishment and during dry spells, particularly in containers. Avoid allowing the compost to dry out completely.

Soil

Japanese Azaleas require acidic soil to perform well. Where garden soil is alkaline, grow them in a container filled with ericaceous compost and use a fertiliser formulated for acid-loving plants.

Pruning

Minimal pruning is required. Remove faded flower trusses after flowering if desired, and lightly trim only to maintain shape.
