Overview

Goeppertia orbifolia, still widely sold as Calathea orbifolia, is one of the most impressive foliage houseplants, admired for its broad, rounded leaves decorated with bold silvery-green stripes. Its generous foliage creates an immediate tropical feel, making it an excellent statement plant for modern interiors.

With its naturally upright, clump-forming habit, this plant is ideal for bright living spaces where its decorative leaves can be fully appreciated. Given warmth, consistent moisture and good humidity, it provides lush evergreen interest throughout the year.

Growing Guide

Indoor Placement

Position in bright, indirect light away from direct sunshine, which can scorch the leaves and fade their distinctive markings. Protect from cold draughts and sudden temperature changes.

Watering

Keep the compost evenly moist but not waterlogged. Water when the surface of the compost begins to dry, allowing excess water to drain away.

Humidity

Higher humidity helps maintain healthy, unblemished foliage. A bright bathroom with natural light is an ideal location, or increase humidity around the plant in drier rooms.

Feeding

Feed monthly with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser during spring and summer. Reduce feeding during autumn and winter as growth slows.
