Calathea rufibarba – supplied in a P19 pot

Plant Highlights: Long, gently arching velvet-textured leaves • Rich green foliage with burgundy-purple undersides • Brings movement and texture to indoor spaces • Thrives in warm, humid conditions

Overview

Calathea rufibarba, commonly known as the Velvet Calathea or Furry Feather Calathea, is an elegant foliage houseplant prized for its long, narrow leaves with a distinctive soft, velvety texture. The deep green upper surface contrasts beautifully with the rich burgundy-purple undersides, creating interest from every angle.

Unlike many Calatheas that are grown for bold leaf patterns, Calathea rufibarba offers a softer, more natural look with gracefully arching foliage. It makes an excellent statement plant for living rooms, offices and naturally bright bathrooms where humidity is higher.

Indoor Placement

Place in bright, indirect light away from prolonged direct sunshine, which can scorch the foliage. Warm rooms with consistent temperatures and good humidity suit this plant best. Bright bathrooms and kitchens with natural light provide excellent conditions.

Avoid cold draughts, radiators and sudden temperature changes, which may cause leaf edges to brown or curl.

Growing Guide

Keep the compost evenly moist but never saturated. Water when the surface of the compost begins to dry, reducing watering during the darker winter months as growth slows naturally.

Feed monthly during the growing season with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser. Higher humidity will help keep the foliage looking its best.

Good to Know

Like other members of the prayer plant family, the leaves of Calathea rufibarba naturally move in response to changing light levels, often lifting slightly in the evening and relaxing again during the day.
