Overview

Goeppertia warszewiczii, commonly sold under its former name Calathea warscewiczii, is an impressive indoor foliage plant with large, softly textured leaves. Each dark green leaf is marked with a lighter green, feather-like pattern along the central vein, while the purple underside becomes visible as the foliage changes position throughout the day.

Its upright, clump-forming habit gives it a lush presence on a plant stand, low table or floor-level display. Jungle Velvet Calathea appreciates steady warmth, good humidity and carefully managed watering, making it particularly suited to a bright bathroom or kitchen with adequate natural light.

Indoor Placement

Position in bright, indirect light, protected from strong direct sun through glass. An east-facing window or a place slightly back from a brighter window usually provides suitable light.

Bathrooms and kitchens can offer the humidity this plant enjoys, but they must have adequate natural light. In living rooms or bedrooms, keep it away from radiators, fireplaces, cold draughts and frequently opened exterior doors.

Growing Guide

Keep the compost relatively evenly moist during active growth, watering when the upper layer begins to feel slightly dry. Water thoroughly, then allow all excess moisture to drain. Do not leave the nursery pot standing in water.

Reduce watering during the darker winter months, when the compost dries more slowly. Rainwater or filtered water may help where hard tap water contributes to brown leaf tips.

Maintain moderate to high humidity around the plant without leaving the foliage constantly wet. Feed lightly during spring and summer with a balanced houseplant fertiliser, following the manufacturer’s directions.

Good to Know

The foliage may rise and fold as light levels change, revealing more of the purple leaf undersides. This natural daily movement is characteristic of many plants in the prayer plant family.

Crisp edges can result from dry air, irregular watering, direct sun or cold draughts. Stable conditions are more beneficial than frequent changes in position or watering routine.
