Camassia leichtlinii subsp. suksdorfii 'Alba', commonly known as White Camas, is a graceful bulbous perennial prized for its tall spires of pure white, star-shaped flowers. Growing Guide
Position
Plant in full sun or partial shade. It performs particularly well in open borders, meadow planting and beneath deciduous trees where it receives spring sunlight before the tree canopy develops.
Watering
Water regularly during active growth if conditions become dry. Once established, Camassia appreciates soil that remains reasonably moist during spring but drains freely after flowering.
Soil
Grow in fertile, humus-rich, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. Unlike many spring-flowering bulbs, Camassia tolerates heavier clay soils provided they do not remain permanently waterlogged.
Hardiness and Winter Care
Fully hardy throughout Ireland. Leave the foliage in place after flowering until it has naturally yellowed and died back, allowing the bulb to store energy for the following year's display.
Routine Care
Deadhead spent flower spikes if seed is not required. Divide congested clumps in autumn every few years to maintain vigour or to establish new planting areas.
