This mixed selection of Carex includes a range of evergreen ornamental sedges grown for their elegant, arching foliage and reliable year-round garden interest. Growing Guide

Position

Grow in full sun or partial shade. Most varieties perform best where the soil remains evenly moist, although established plants generally tolerate short dry periods better than prolonged drought.

Watering

Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a strong root system. Once established, water during extended dry spells, particularly plants growing in containers where compost dries more quickly.

Soil

Plant in fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. Carex also grows well in quality peat-free, loam-based compost in outdoor containers, provided excess water can drain away freely.

Hardiness and Winter Care

These hardy evergreen sedges are well suited to Irish gardens and retain their foliage throughout the year. After particularly cold or exposed winters, some leaves may become weathered, but fresh growth will emerge in spring.

Routine Care

Rather than cutting the entire plant back, gently comb through the foliage in late winter or early spring to remove dead or damaged leaves. Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring if required to encourage healthy new growth.
