Growing Guide
Position
Plant in full sun for the best foliage colour and compact growth. It is suitable for both sheltered and reasonably exposed locations.
Watering
Water regularly during the first growing season while establishing. Once established, water during prolonged dry spells, particularly if grown in containers.
Soil
Grow in moist but well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Good drainage is essential, especially during winter, although the plant appreciates soil that does not dry out completely.
Hardiness and Winter Care
Fully hardy throughout Ireland. Apply a mulch around newly planted specimens in spring to help retain soil moisture. Container-grown plants should be monitored during prolonged dry periods.
Routine Care
Very little pruning is required. If shaping is desired, trim lightly during the growing season without cutting back into old wood that has no green foliage. Plants grown as formal specimens or hedges can be clipped once or twice each year.
Perfect For

Good to Know
'Ellwoodii' is the recipient of the Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit (AGM) for its reliable garden performance. It grows slowly, making it easy to maintain, but given enough years will eventually become a medium-sized evergreen specimen rather than remaining dwarf.
