Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Lucas'

Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Lucas'

7.5L Pot | Approx. 70cm Tall

Plant Highlights: Bright golden evergreen foliage • Naturally compact upright habit • Soft fan-like sprays • Excellent year-round structure • Ideal for specimen planting and containers

Overview

Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Lucas' is a compact selection of Hinoki Cypress, prized for its dense, butter-yellow to golden foliage and naturally tidy upright habit. The soft, fan-like sprays provide year-round colour and texture, creating a bright focal point that contrasts beautifully with darker evergreens and flowering shrubs.

Its slow, refined growth makes 'Lucas' an excellent choice for contemporary gardens, Japanese-inspired landscapes, mixed borders and large patio containers. In partial shade, the foliage may take on softer greenish-yellow tones while retaining its ornamental appeal.

  • Naturally compact habit requires very little maintenance.

Growing Guide

Position

Plant in full sun or partial shade. A sunny position encourages the brightest golden foliage, while partial shade produces softer greenish-yellow tones. Choose a sheltered site protected from drying winds where possible.

Watering

Keep the soil evenly moist while the plant establishes. Once established, water during prolonged dry periods, particularly if grown in a container. Avoid prolonged waterlogging.

Soil

Grow in fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Apply a mulch in spring to help conserve moisture, keeping it clear of the trunk.

Hardiness and Winter Care

Fully hardy in Irish gardens (RHS H6). Container-grown plants should be monitored during prolonged dry or freezing weather to prevent the roots from drying out.

Routine Care

Very little pruning is required. Remove any dead or damaged shoots as necessary and lightly trim only to maintain the natural shape. Avoid cutting back into older, leafless wood, as conifers rarely regenerate from bare stems.
