About this product

Chlorophytum comosum 'Ocean' – Supplied in a P10.5 Pot

Plant Highlights: Compact variegated spider plant • Green leaves edged in creamy white • Arching stems may produce small plantlets • Suits shelves and hanging displays • Adaptable to a range of bright indoor positions

Overview

Chlorophytum comosum 'Ocean' is a compact spider plant with broad, gently arching leaves. Its fresh green foliage is neatly edged in creamy white, giving the plant a crisp, bright appearance throughout the year.

'Ocean' has shorter, broader leaves than many traditional spider plants, creating a dense, rounded clump that fits easily onto shelves, desks and plant stands. Mature plants may produce slender arching stems carrying small white flowers followed by young plantlets. These stems look particularly effective when allowed to trail from a hanging pot or raised display.

Indoor Placement

Place in bright, indirect light for the strongest growth and clearest variegation. It will tolerate a slightly shadier position, although growth may become slower and the leaf markings less distinct.

A bright bathroom or kitchen can provide suitable conditions where there is adequate natural light. In living rooms or bedrooms, keep the plant away from strong midday sun, radiators, fireplaces and cold draughts.

Growing Guide

Water when the upper layer of compost begins to feel dry. Moisten the root ball thoroughly, then allow excess water to drain before returning the plant to its decorative pot. Avoid leaving the roots standing in water.

Growth slows during the darker winter months, so check the compost before watering rather than following a fixed schedule. Brown leaf tips can result from irregular watering, dry air or a build-up of minerals in the compost. Rainwater or filtered water may help where practical.

Feed lightly during spring and summer with a balanced houseplant fertiliser, following the manufacturer’s instructions.

Seasonal Care

Remove damaged leaves at the base using clean scissors. Finished flowering stems can be trimmed away, or the plantlets can be left in place to develop the plant’s trailing appearance.

Repot when roots have filled the container and the compost begins drying unusually quickly.
