About this product

Clematis alpina 'Ruby' – supplied in a 2-litre pot, approximately 65 cm tall

Plant Highlights: Ruby-pink nodding flowers in spring • Early-flowering alpine clematis • Vigorous yet easy to maintain • Ideal for walls, fences, pergolas and growing through shrubs

Overview

Clematis alpina 'Ruby' is an elegant early-flowering climber, producing masses of nodding, ruby-pink bell-shaped flowers in spring. The blooms appear on the previous year's growth, bringing welcome colour to the garden before many larger-flowered clematis come into bloom.

Its graceful stems climb naturally by twining leaf stalks around supports, making it ideal for training over trellises, arches, pergolas and fences. It also looks particularly attractive scrambling through established shrubs or small trees, creating a natural woodland effect. After flowering, the decorative silky seed heads provide additional seasonal interest.

Growing Guide

Plant in fertile, well-drained soil with the roots kept cool and shaded by neighbouring plants or a layer of mulch. The stems and flowers appreciate growing into good light, making a position in full sun or partial shade ideal.

Water regularly while establishing and during prolonged dry periods. Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring and mulch annually to help retain moisture and improve soil structure.

Wildlife

The early flowers provide a valuable nectar source for bees and other pollinating insects during spring.

Pruning

As an early-flowering Group 1 clematis, 'Ruby' requires little pruning. Remove dead or damaged stems and lightly shape the plant immediately after flowering if needed, avoiding hard pruning which can reduce the following year's display.
