Plant Highlights: Masses of pure white flowers in spring • Evergreen glossy foliage • Ideal for walls, fences and trellises • Compact climbing habit • Suitable for sheltered gardens and large containers

Overview

Clematis × cartmanii 'Avalanche' is an elegant evergreen climber that produces a spectacular display of pure white, star-shaped flowers in spring. The blooms are carried in abundance against glossy, finely divided dark green foliage, creating a bright, fresh display when many other climbers are only beginning to grow.

Supplied in a 23 cm pot (5 litre), this attractive clematis is ideal for training over a trellis, obelisk, fence or sheltered wall. Its manageable growth and year-round foliage also make it an excellent choice for large patio containers with suitable support.

Plant Details

Growing Guide

Plant in fertile, well-drained soil with support for climbing. A position with sun or light shade is ideal, while the roots benefit from remaining cool and shaded by surrounding planting or a layer of mulch. Choose a sheltered location, particularly in colder or exposed gardens, as evergreen clematis appreciate protection from harsh winter winds.

Water regularly during establishment and during extended dry periods, especially when grown in containers. Feed in spring with a balanced fertiliser to encourage healthy growth and flowering.

Pruning

Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape and remove any dead or damaged growth. As flowers are produced on the previous season's growth, avoid hard pruning.

Why We Love It

'Avalanche' provides exceptional spring colour while remaining attractive throughout the year thanks to its evergreen foliage. Its compact habit makes it easy to grow where space is limited, bringing vertical interest to patios and garden walls.
