Coprosma 'Chocolate Soldier' – Evergreen Shrub (3 Litre Container, 20–25 cm)
Plant Highlights: Rich chocolate-bronze evergreen foliage • Glossy leaves with year-round colour • Compact, naturally bushy habit • Excellent for pots and mixed borders • Well suited to coastal gardens
Coprosma 'Chocolate Soldier' is a compact evergreen shrub grown for its striking glossy foliage, which develops rich chocolate-brown and bronze tones throughout the year. The lustrous leaves provide reliable structure and colour in the garden, making this New Zealand native a valuable choice when flowers are not the main attraction.
Its naturally neat, rounded habit makes it equally at home in borders, gravel gardens and patio containers, where the foliage colour contrasts beautifully with silver, green or flowering plants. Once established, it is well suited to milder Irish gardens in a sheltered position with free-draining soil.

Grow in full sun or partial shade, where the foliage develops its richest colouring. Plant in fertile, free-draining soil and avoid sites prone to winter waterlogging. Water regularly during the first growing season while the plant establishes, then only during prolonged dry periods.
In colder or more exposed gardens, choose a sheltered location to protect the evergreen foliage from harsh winter winds. Container-grown plants benefit from winter protection during severe frosts.
The changing tones of the glossy foliage bring interest throughout the seasons without relying on flowers. Its compact growth makes it easy to incorporate into contemporary planting schemes, patio displays and smaller gardens, while the evergreen leaves provide colour even in winter.
Apply a mulch in spring to help conserve moisture and feed the soil. Light trimming in late spring or early summer will maintain a tidy, bushy shape if required. Remove any damaged or frost-affected growth once new growth begins in spring.
Good to Know: The stated 20–25 cm refers to the approximate height of the plant at the time of sale. Mature size will depend on growing conditions and should not be inferred from the supplied plant size.
