Overview

Cotinus 'Dusky Maiden' is a compact Smoke Bush grown for its richly coloured purple foliage and airy, smoke-like flower plumes that appear in summer. Its naturally bushy habit makes it an excellent choice where space is limited, offering the same dramatic foliage interest as larger Cotinus varieties in a more manageable form.

From spring onwards, the deep purple leaves provide striking contrast with surrounding plants before developing warm autumn shades later in the season. The delicate, misty flower plumes add another layer of interest, giving the shrub its familiar common name.

Growing Guide

Plant in full sun for the richest foliage colour, although it will also grow well in partial shade. It thrives in fertile, well-drained soil and benefits from good drainage, particularly during winter.

Water regularly during the establishment period and during prolonged dry spells. Apply a mulch in spring to help retain moisture and improve soil structure while keeping the base of the plant clear.

Pruning

Minimal pruning is required. Remove dead or damaged branches in late winter or early spring and lightly shape the shrub after flowering if necessary. Hard pruning can encourage vigorous new foliage growth but may reduce flowering that season.
