Overview

Dianthus 'Rebekah'® is a compact, mound-forming evergreen perennial grown for its richly coloured, sweetly scented flowers and tidy blue-green foliage. From late spring into summer, it produces an abundance of double crimson-red blooms with finely fringed petals, creating a vibrant display above neat evergreen cushions of foliage.

Its compact habit makes it an excellent choice for the front of sunny borders, gravel gardens, alpine beds and containers. The fragrant flowers are ideal for planting close to paths, patios and seating areas where their perfume can be fully appreciated. At maturity, plants typically reach 25–30cm in height with a spread of approximately 30–40cm.

Growing Guide

Position

Plant in a sunny position where it will receive plenty of direct sunlight. Dianthus performs best in open, airy locations with excellent drainage.

Watering

Water regularly while establishing, then only during extended dry periods. Avoid excessive watering, particularly during winter, as the plant dislikes prolonged wet conditions.

Soil

Grow in fertile, free-draining or gritty soil. Raised beds, rockeries and containers with excellent drainage are particularly well suited.

Hardiness and Winter Care

Fully hardy throughout Ireland and the UK. Good drainage during winter is essential to maintain healthy plants and prevent crown rot.

Maintenance

Remove faded flowers regularly to encourage further blooming. After the main flowering period, lightly trim the plant to maintain its compact shape and encourage fresh evergreen growth. Feed in spring to support vigorous flowering.

Perfect For

  • Front of borders.
  • Rock and gravel gardens.
  • Alpine beds.
  • Patio containers.
  • Cottage gardens.
  • Path edging.
  • Wildlife-friendly planting.

Good to Know

This variety performs best in lean, free-draining soils and is particularly reliable where winter drainage is excellent. Avoid heavy, waterlogged ground, which can shorten the plant's lifespan.
