Overview
Dicksonia antarctica, commonly known as the Tasmanian Tree Fern, is one of the most admired architectural ferns for temperate gardens. It forms a distinctive fibrous trunk topped with a graceful crown of large, arching deep green fronds, creating a lush woodland or tropical effect throughout the year.
Slow-growing and long-lived, this evergreen tree fern makes a striking focal point in sheltered gardens, courtyards and large containers. It thrives in cool, humid conditions and brings texture and height to shaded planting schemes where many flowering plants struggle.

- Creates an instant tropical or woodland atmosphere.
- Excellent specimen for shaded gardens and courtyards.
- Slow-growing and long-lived with minimal pruning.

Growing Guide
Position
Plant in partial shade or full shade, ideally in a sheltered woodland setting where the fronds are protected from strong or drying winds.
Watering
Keep both the soil and the fibrous trunk consistently moist during the growing season. In warm or dry weather, water directly into the crown as well as around the base to keep the developing fronds hydrated. Never allow the root zone to dry out completely while the plant is establishing.
Soil
Grow in fertile, humus-rich soil that retains moisture while draining freely. Incorporating plenty of organic matter before planting will help maintain the cool, damp conditions this fern prefers.
Hardiness and Winter Care
Well suited to Ireland's mild, moist climate. During prolonged severe frost, protect the crown with horticultural fleece or dry straw, as this is where new fronds emerge. Container-grown plants may require additional winter protection.
Routine Care
Remove old or damaged fronds in spring before new growth unfurls. Apply a mulch of leaf mould or compost annually to help conserve moisture and enrich the soil.

Good to Know
The supplied 90cm measurement refers to the height of the trunk at the time of sale, not the plant's mature height. Tree ferns grow slowly, adding only a few centimetres of trunk each year under favourable conditions.
