Overview

The Spear & Jackson Elements Draw Hoe is a traditional long-handled cultivating tool designed for chopping into soil, breaking up the surface and working between plants and vegetable rows. Its wide blade sits at a right angle to the shaft, allowing it to be drawn through the soil or used with a chopping action when working harder ground.

A 125mm / 5in heat-treated hardened carbon steel blade provides strength and durability for regular garden cultivation. The head has a protective hammer-finish epoxy coating for improved resistance to rust, scratches, humidity and alkalis in the soil, while the long weatherproofed ash wood shaft provides excellent reach. A soft-feel grip completes this practical Elements garden tool.

Why We Love It

  • Traditional draw-hoe action: pull the blade through the soil for straightforward cultivation and weed control.

  • Useful on harder ground: the right-angled blade can also be used with a chopping or slicing action.

  • 125mm blade: wide enough for efficient cultivation while remaining practical between planting rows.

  • Strong carbon steel: heat treated and hardened for durability.

  • Protected head: epoxy coating improves resistance to rust, scratches and demanding soil conditions.

  • Long reach: the 56in shaft allows much of the work to be carried out from a standing position.

  • Comfortable grip: soft-feel handle provides additional grip and comfort.

  • Built to last: backed by Spear & Jackson's 10-year guarantee.

How to Use

Cultivating Soil

Hold the hoe securely and draw the blade through the upper layer of soil. This helps break up the surface and create a workable tilth around established plants or before sowing and planting.

The long shaft provides good reach across beds and vegetable plots while allowing you to work from a more upright position.

Removing Weeds

Draw the blade through the soil just beneath or around young weeds to cut and dislodge them.

For best results, tackle weeds while they are still small. Take care when working close to wanted plants so that their stems and roots are not damaged.

Working Harder Ground

The downward-facing blade can also be used with a controlled chopping or slicing action to help work into firmer soil before drawing the loosened material back towards you.

Avoid excessive force or using the hoe as a lever against stones, roots or other solid obstructions.

Perfect For

  • Vegetable plots and kitchen gardens

  • Beds and borders

  • Working between vegetable rows

  • Chopping and slicing into harder surface soil

  • Removing young weeds

  • Breaking up surface soil

  • General garden cultivation

  • Grow-your-own gardening

Good to Know

Unlike a Dutch hoe, which is commonly pushed through the soil, a draw hoe is primarily pulled towards the gardener. Its right-angled blade makes it particularly useful for chopping, drawing and cultivating soil.

The Elements Draw Hoe combines a 125mm hardened carbon steel head with an approximately 56in ash wood shaft, giving useful reach for working beds and vegetable plots.

The hammer-finish epoxy coating improves resistance to rust, scratches, humidity and alkalis in the soil, while the clear-lacquered shaft is weatherproofed for improved durability.

Care & Storage

Remove soil and plant debris from the blade after use and allow the tool to dry before storage.

Keep the hoe in a dry, sheltered location to help preserve the carbon steel head and wooden shaft. Periodically inspect the blade, head-to-shaft connection and grip for wear or damage.
