Overview

The Spear & Jackson Elements Dutch Hoe is a traditional long-handled garden hoe designed for weeding and cultivating the surface of beds, borders and vegetable plots. Its flat 125mm / 5in head is particularly useful for working through the upper layer of soil around established plants and along vegetable rows.

Built for dependable everyday garden use, the hoe features a heat-treated and hardened carbon steel head for strength and durability. A hammer-finish powder coating improves resistance to rust, scratches, humidity and alkalis in the soil, while the long clear-lacquered, weatherproofed ash wood shaft provides useful reach. A soft-feel grip completes the tool for additional comfort and control.

Why We Love It

  • Great for routine weeding: ideal for tackling young weeds throughout beds and vegetable plots.

How to Use

Weeding

Work the Dutch hoe through the upper layer of soil around young weeds, using controlled movements to cut or dislodge them.

For best results, tackle weeds while they are small and actively growing, before they become deeply established or have an opportunity to set seed.

Cultivating

Use the hoe to lightly work the surface of beds, borders and vegetable plots. Regular shallow cultivation can help keep the soil surface workable while removing newly emerging weeds at the same time.

Working Around Plants

The 125mm-wide head provides useful control for working between established plants and along vegetable rows.

Keep the hoe sufficiently clear of wanted plants to avoid damaging stems or shallow root systems.

Perfect For

  • Weeding beds and borders

  • Vegetable plots and kitchen gardens

  • Working between vegetable rows

  • Removing young weeds

  • Shallow surface cultivation

  • Maintaining established planting areas

  • Grow-your-own gardening

  • Regular garden maintenance

Good to Know

A Dutch hoe is particularly useful for regular shallow weeding and cultivation. Tackling weeds when they are young generally requires less effort and helps prevent them becoming established.

The Elements Dutch Hoe combines a 125mm hardened carbon steel head with a 56in ash wood shaft, giving good reach across beds and vegetable plots.

The hammer-finish powder coating improves resistance to rust, scratches, humidity and alkalis in the soil, while the ash shaft is clear lacquered and weatherproofed for greater durability.

Care & Storage

Remove soil and plant debris from the hoe after use and allow the tool to dry before storage.

Store in a dry, sheltered location to help preserve the carbon steel head and wooden shaft. Periodically inspect the head, shaft connection and grip for signs of wear or damage.
