Eremurus in Varieties

Eremurus spp.

5L nursery pot

Plant Highlights: Tall architectural flower spikes • Summer flowering • Excellent for sunny borders • Pollinator-friendly blooms • Mixed selection of varieties

Overview

Eremurus, commonly known as Foxtail Lily, is a striking herbaceous perennial grown for its tall, elegant flower spikes that rise above clumps of narrow, strap-like foliage in early to mid-summer. This mixed selection includes a range of varieties, so flower colour and eventual size may vary, while all share the same dramatic upright habit and architectural presence.

Ideal for adding height and vertical interest, Eremurus makes an impressive feature in sunny perennial borders and prairie-style planting schemes. Its nectar-rich flowers also attract bees and other pollinating insects, while the strong flower spikes make excellent cut flowers.

Growing Guide

Position

Choose a warm, open position in full sun. Sheltering the tall flower spikes from strong winds will help prevent damage during flowering.

Watering

Water regularly while plants establish and during prolonged dry spells in spring and early summer. Once established, avoid keeping the crown constantly wet, particularly during winter.

Soil

Plant in fertile, free-draining soil enriched with organic matter. Good drainage is essential, especially on heavier soils, as the fleshy roots dislike sitting in water.

Hardiness and Winter Care

Hardy throughout most of Ireland when grown in well-drained conditions. Winter wet is more likely to cause problems than low temperatures, so improve drainage before planting where necessary.

Routine Care

Remove spent flower spikes once flowering has finished if seed is not required. Allow the foliage to die back naturally before removing it, as this helps replenish the roots for the following season. Avoid disturbing established plants unless division is necessary.

Perfect For

  • Sunny perennial borders.
  • Prairie and naturalistic planting schemes.
  • Architectural garden displays.
  • Mixed cottage-style borders.
