Overview

Westland Ericaceous Specialist Planting Mix 25L is a specialist growing medium formulated for ericaceous, lime-hating plants that need an acidic root environment. Ideal for favourites including rhododendrons, azaleas and camellias, it can be used for both potting and planting out.

The mix provides up to six months of slow-release nutrition, helping support strong growth, abundant flowering and healthy foliage. Slow-release iron helps maintain the acidic root conditions these plants require while supporting chlorophyll production for greener, glossier leaves. An added zinc complex supports plant resilience as well as healthy root and shoot development.

How to Use

Before Use

Rework the compost between your hands before planting to allow it to regain its intended texture.

Potting

Water the plant thoroughly before repotting. Gently tap the existing pot to release the plant and shake away loose compost.

Half-fill the new pot with Westland Ericaceous Specialist Planting Mix, position the plant and fill around the root ball with more mix. Gently firm into place and water thoroughly.

Planting Out

Dig a planting hole approximately twice the depth and diameter of the root ball.

Position the plant in the hole with fresh ericaceous planting mix around the root system. Fill the remaining gaps, gently firm the plant into position and water thoroughly.

Aftercare

The mix contains slow-release nutrition for up to six months. If plants subsequently appear pale or develop yellow leaves, apply a suitable supplementary feed for ericaceous plants.

Deadhead spent flowers where appropriate to direct the plant's energy towards continued growth and flowering.

Added Iron & Zinc Complex

Slow-Release Iron

Slow-release iron helps maintain the acidic root environment required by ericaceous plants. It also supports chlorophyll production, helping promote greener, glossier foliage.

Zinc Complex

The added zinc complex helps support plant resilience and is involved in the production of the plant growth hormone auxin. This contributes to the movement of water and nutrients through the plant, healthy root and shoot development and photosynthesis.

Good to Know

This is a specialist ericaceous growing medium, rather than a general-purpose compost. It is formulated for plants that require lime-free, acidic growing conditions.

The current Westland product specification confirms 25L as an available pack size and provides up to six months of slow-release nutrition.

This mix is not recommended for general houseplants; use a dedicated houseplant potting mix instead.

  • Reseal the bag after use.

  • Use in a well-ventilated area and avoid breathing in dust.
