About this product

Euonymus alatus – supplied in a 7.5-litre container, approximately 60 cm tall

Plant Highlights: Spectacular scarlet autumn colour • Distinctive corky winged stems • Neat, bushy habit • An outstanding shrub for seasonal interest

Overview

Euonymus alatus, commonly known as the Winged Spindle or Burning Bush, is a deciduous shrub renowned for its brilliant autumn display. During spring and summer it forms a dense framework of fresh green foliage, before transforming into vivid shades of scarlet and crimson in autumn, making it one of the finest shrubs for seasonal colour.

Even after the leaves have fallen, the unusual corky "wings" along the stems provide architectural interest throughout winter. Its naturally rounded habit makes it equally suitable as a specimen plant, within mixed shrub borders or as part of an informal hedge.

Growing Guide

Plant in full sun or partial shade in fertile, well-drained soil. The most vibrant autumn colour is usually achieved in a sunny position, although the shrub also performs well with light shade.

Water regularly during the first growing season while establishing. Once established, it requires relatively little maintenance and benefits from an annual mulch to help retain soil moisture and improve soil structure.

Wildlife

The small flowers may attract pollinating insects, while the shrub's dense branching can provide shelter for garden wildlife.

Pruning

Little pruning is required. Remove any dead, damaged or crossing branches in late winter or early spring and lightly shape if necessary while preserving the shrub's natural form.
