Euphorbia 'Miner's Merlot'

Euphorbia 'Miner's Merlot'

1L nursery pot

Plant Highlights: Rich burgundy foliage • Lime-green spring flower bracts • Evergreen architectural form • Drought tolerant once established • Excellent for sunny borders

Overview

Euphorbia 'Miner's Merlot' is a distinctive evergreen perennial grown for its dramatic deep burgundy to purple foliage, which provides striking colour throughout the year. In spring, upright stems are topped with vibrant lime-green flower bracts that contrast beautifully against the dark leaves, creating a bold architectural display in the garden.

Its compact, bushy habit makes it an excellent choice for gravel gardens, Mediterranean-style planting, mixed borders and patio containers. Tough and easy to grow once established, it thrives in sunny, well-drained positions and provides valuable early-season interest alongside spring-flowering bulbs and other perennials.

Growing Guide

Position

Plant in full sun for the richest foliage colour, although light partial shade is tolerated. Choose an open position with good drainage for the healthiest growth.

Watering

Water regularly during the first growing season while establishing. Once established, plants are relatively drought tolerant and usually only require watering during prolonged dry spells.

Soil

Grow in well-drained soil of low to moderate fertility. Avoid heavy, waterlogged ground, particularly during winter, as prolonged wet conditions can damage the crown.

Hardiness and Winter Care

Fully hardy in most Irish gardens when planted in free-draining soil. Leave the evergreen foliage in place throughout winter. Remove spent flowering stems back to the base after flowering, taking care to retain any new shoots emerging from the crown.

Routine Care

Wear gloves when pruning or handling the plant, as the characteristic milky sap can irritate skin and eyes. Apply a light mulch around, but not over, the crown in spring to help conserve moisture and suppress weeds.

Perfect For

  • Sunny mixed borders.
  • Gravel gardens.
  • Mediterranean-style planting.
  • Contemporary landscapes.
  • Patio containers.
  • Architectural planting schemes.

Good to Know

Like all Euphorbia, this plant produces a milky white sap when stems are cut or damaged. Avoid contact with skin and eyes, and wash hands after handling. Its colourful spring display comes from long-lasting flower bracts rather than true petals.
