Plant Highlights: Bold glossy evergreen foliage • Excellent for shade and sheltered gardens • Architectural year-round interest • Ideal for containers and woodland planting • Autumn flowers followed by ornamental berries
Overview
Fatsia japonica, commonly known as Japanese Aralia, is a handsome evergreen shrub prized for its large, deeply lobed, glossy green leaves that bring bold texture to the garden throughout the year. Its naturally rounded habit makes it an excellent architectural plant, particularly in shaded borders, woodland gardens and sheltered courtyards.
In autumn, mature plants produce rounded clusters of creamy-white flowers, followed by small black berries that add seasonal interest into winter. Its lush foliage also makes it a popular choice for contemporary planting and large patio containers.

Growing Guide
Grow in partial shade or full shade in fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. While established plants can tolerate some sun, the foliage is generally at its best in sheltered positions protected from strong midday sun and cold, drying winds.
Water regularly while the plant is becoming established and during prolonged dry spells, especially if grown in a container. Apply a mulch in spring to help retain moisture and improve soil structure.
Wildlife
The autumn flowers provide a valuable late-season source of nectar for pollinating insects, while the berries may be taken by birds later in the season.
Pruning
Little pruning is required. Remove damaged or frost-affected shoots in spring and lightly shape the plant if needed to maintain a balanced form.
Why We Love It
Few evergreen shrubs create such an immediate impact in shaded gardens. The dramatic foliage provides year-round structure and pairs beautifully with ferns, hostas and other shade-loving plants, making Fatsia japonica a dependable choice for adding bold texture.
