Fatsia japonica – Japanese Aralia (P13 Pot, Approx. 30 cm)

Plant Highlights: Bold glossy evergreen foliage • Excellent for shaded gardens • Architectural year-round interest • Ideal for patios and containers • Easy to grow in sheltered positions

Overview

Fatsia japonica, commonly known as Japanese Aralia, is a striking evergreen shrub grown for its large, glossy, deeply lobed leaves that bring bold texture and structure to the garden throughout the year. Its lush foliage makes it a standout choice for shaded borders, woodland-style planting and sheltered courtyards.

As plants mature, rounded clusters of creamy-white flowers appear in autumn, followed by glossy black berries that extend the season of interest. Its naturally rounded habit and dramatic foliage also make it an excellent specimen for large containers on shaded patios.

Growing Guide

Grow in partial shade or full shade in fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. It thrives in sheltered locations where the foliage is protected from cold, drying winds and intense midday sun.

Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a strong root system, then continue to water during prolonged dry spells, particularly if grown in a container. Apply a mulch in spring to help retain soil moisture and improve soil structure.

Wildlife

The late-season flowers provide nectar for pollinating insects, while the berries may provide a food source for birds during autumn and winter.

Pruning

Little pruning is required. Remove any damaged or frost-affected shoots in spring and lightly shape the plant if necessary to maintain a balanced habit.

Why We Love It

With its dramatic evergreen foliage and ability to thrive in shade, Fatsia japonica provides instant structure where many other shrubs struggle. It combines beautifully with ferns, hostas and other woodland plants, creating a lush, tropical feel in sheltered Irish gardens.
