Fig 'Brown Turkey' (Ficus carica)

Overview

‘Brown Turkey’ is the classic hardy fig for outdoor growing in Ireland. It produces medium to large brown-purple figs with sweet, richly flavoured flesh, especially in warm summers or against a sunny wall.

Key Features

  • Most reliable outdoor fig variety for cool climates
  • Sweet, richly flavoured fruit when fully ripe
  • Decorative, large lobed leaves for a Mediterranean look
  • Suitable for training against a wall or growing in large containers

How to Plant

Plant in Free-draining, fertile soil or loam-based compost in a large container. in a position with Full sun in a sheltered, south- or west-facing position.. Dig a generous planting hole, mix in organic matter, and water thoroughly after planting. Apply a mulch around the base to help conserve moisture and suppress weeds.

Care Tips

  • Restrict the root run—either in a large container or a lined pit—to encourage fruiting over leafy growth.
  • Water regularly in summer, especially in pots, and feed with a high-potash fertiliser from late spring.
  • Prune in late winter, thinning congested shoots and removing any dead or weak growth.

Size & Growth Timeline

In the ground, ‘Brown Turkey’ typically reaches 2–3m tall and wide in about 5 years; container-grown specimens will stay nearer 1.5–2m.
