Overview

Vitis vinifera 'Bianca' is a grafted grape vine grown for its clusters of sweet, pale green grapes and attractive ornamental foliage. Supplied organically grown in a 3-litre pot at approximately 55cm tall, it is an excellent choice for training over pergolas, wires or a warm, sunny wall.

The fresh green leaves provide attractive seasonal cover from spring to autumn before turning warm autumn shades. Given plenty of sunshine and a sheltered position, 'Bianca' can reward gardeners with reliable crops of flavourful grapes while adding a Mediterranean feel to the garden.

Growing Guide

Position

Plant in a warm, sheltered position in full sun. A south- or west-facing wall, pergola or trellis provides ideal support and helps maximise fruit ripening in Ireland. Grape vines also perform well in greenhouses and polytunnels.

Soil

Grow in fertile, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Avoid sites that remain waterlogged, particularly during winter.

Watering

Water consistently during the first growing season to establish a healthy root system. Once established, vines need additional watering mainly during prolonged dry spells, with container-grown plants requiring more frequent attention.

Pruning

Prune annually during winter while the vine is dormant to maintain shape and encourage productive fruiting wood. Summer pruning can also help improve airflow and light penetration around developing grape clusters.

Harvesting

Grapes are ready to harvest when they have developed their full colour, taste sweet and are easily removed from the bunch. Flavour improves as the fruit ripens fully on the vine.
