Product Highlights: Improves compost aeration and drainage • Helps create healthy conditions for strong root growth • Lightweight, micro-porous granules • Helps with moisture absorption and retention • Ideal for rooting cuttings and potting-on • Can replace some or all sand or grit in suitable mixes • Suitable for year-round use
Westland Gro-Sure Perlite 10L is a naturally occurring volcanic material that has been heated to high temperatures to create lightweight, micro-porous granules. Mixed with compost, these granules help create a lighter, more open growing medium with improved aeration and drainage around plant roots.
Perlite is particularly useful for rooting cuttings and potting-on young plants, where a good balance of moisture, drainage and air around developing roots is important. Its porous structure also helps with water absorption and retention while reducing the risk of a growing medium becoming overly dense or poorly aerated.
Improves aeration – helps maintain valuable air spaces within compost.
Supports drainage – creates a lighter, more open growing medium.
Promotes healthy roots – improved root-zone conditions encourage strong development.
Useful for propagation – particularly suited to rooting soft-stem and leaf cuttings.
Excellent for potting-on – easily mixed with multi-purpose compost.
Lightweight material – improves compost structure without adding the weight associated with sand or grit.
Versatile – perlite can wholly or partly replace sand or grit where a light, open structure is required.

Gro-Sure Perlite should be dampened before handling to help reduce dust.
When using the entire 10L bag, add up to 1 litre of water directly to the bag and leave it to soak for several minutes before use.
For soft-stem and leaf cuttings, mix:
1 part Gro-Sure Perlite + 1 part Gro-Sure Seed & Cutting Compost by volume.
This open mixture provides a useful balance of air, moisture and drainage around developing roots.
For harder cuttings and fragile plants, increase the proportion to:
2 parts Gro-Sure Perlite + 1 part Gro-Sure Seed & Cutting Compost.
Keep cuttings appropriately watered while ensuring that pots can drain freely.
For potting-on young plants, use Gro-Sure All Purpose Compost with 25% Gro-Sure Perlite added.
Perlite can also be used as a whole or partial replacement for sand and grit where a light, very open growing-medium structure is required.
Before transplanting, water plants well and allow excess water to drain. Remove the plant carefully from its original pot, position it in the new container and firm the prepared compost mixture gently around the roots. Water after planting and feed as appropriate for the plant.
The micro-porous structure of Gro-Sure Perlite helps modify the physical characteristics of a growing medium by:
Increasing air space around plant roots
Improving drainage through the compost
Helping with moisture absorption and retention
Creating a lighter and more open compost structure
Supporting strong, healthy root growth
Providing useful insulation within the growing medium
Unlike a fertiliser, perlite is primarily used to improve the physical structure of the growing medium.
Rooting plant cuttings
Soft-stem and leaf cuttings
Potting-on seedlings and young plants
Improving compost drainage
Increasing aeration around roots
Creating lighter potting mixtures
Reducing reliance on sand or grit in suitable growing mixes
Propagation and general container gardening
Gro-Sure Perlite is made from naturally occurring volcanic rock. Heating the material to very high temperatures expands it into the characteristic lightweight, porous granules used in horticulture.
For potting-on, the recommended 25% Perlite addition means approximately one-quarter of the finished compost mixture should be perlite by volume.
Perlite is especially useful where ordinary compost needs additional drainage and aeration, but watering requirements will still depend on the plant, container and growing conditions.
Dampen the perlite before use to minimise airborne dust and avoid breathing dust while handling.
Store the bag in a cool, dry place and keep it securely closed when not in use.
Always follow the handling and safety information provided on the current product packaging.
