Westland Gro-Sure Vermiculite 10L is a lightweight horticultural growing-medium additive particularly useful for seed sowing, propagation and potting-on. Vermiculite is a naturally occurring mineral that is heated to a high temperature to create highly absorbent, lightweight flakes with a large surface area.
Mixed into growing media, Gro-Sure Vermiculite helps compost retain moisture and valuable plant nutrients, reducing the amount washed through the growing medium and making them available around developing roots. It can also be used when sowing seeds to provide valuable insulation against changes in temperature and humidity.
Its combination of moisture retention and insulation makes it especially useful when creating the consistently moist conditions needed for healthy seed germination and early seedling development.
Excellent for propagation – creates favourable conditions for seed germination and young seedlings.
Retains moisture – increases the water-holding capacity of growing media.
Helps hold nutrients – reduces nutrient losses through the compost.
Provides insulation – useful as a seed covering to protect against temperature and humidity fluctuations.
Lightweight material – adds useful moisture-holding properties without making growing media unnecessarily heavy.
Indoor and outdoor use – suitable for a wide range of propagation and potting jobs.
Versatile – use with seed and cutting compost or when potting-on plants.

Gro-Sure Vermiculite can be used with seed and cutting compost to create favourable conditions for germinating seeds and developing seedlings.
Its absorbent structure helps maintain the moist environment required during germination while also helping the growing medium hold valuable nutrients.
Vermiculite can also be used as a covering over suitable seeds, where its insulating properties help protect against damaging changes in temperature and humidity.
Always follow the sowing depth and covering requirements for the particular seeds being grown, as some varieties have specific germination requirements.
Gro-Sure Vermiculite can also be incorporated when potting-on indoor or outdoor plants where additional moisture and nutrient retention is beneficial.
Before transplanting, water the plant well and allow excess water to drain. Carefully remove the plant from its existing pot and position it in the new container.
Firm the prepared growing medium gently around the roots, then water thoroughly. Feed subsequently according to the requirements of the plant and the compost being used.
Gro-Sure Vermiculite is heated during manufacture to create its characteristic lightweight, expanded structure and high surface area.
This structure allows the material to:
Absorb and retain moisture
Help compost hold valuable plant nutrients
Make retained nutrients available around plant roots
Support the consistently moist conditions required by seedlings
Provide insulation during germination
Help protect germinating seed against fluctuations in temperature and humidity
Unlike a plant fertiliser, vermiculite is primarily used to modify and improve the physical growing environment around seeds and roots.
Sowing seeds
Seed trays and propagation
Healthy seedling establishment
Mixing with seed and cutting compost
Potting-on young plants
Indoor plants
Outdoor container plants
Growing situations where improved moisture retention is beneficial
Vermiculite and perlite perform different jobs in a growing medium. Gro-Sure Vermiculite is particularly useful where moisture and nutrient retention plus insulation are priorities, while perlite is generally selected primarily to increase aeration and drainage.
Gro-Sure Vermiculite is a naturally occurring mineral that is processed using heat to create its lightweight, absorbent horticultural form.
The product is suitable for use throughout the year, making it a useful addition to the propagation cupboard for both spring seed sowing and indoor growing projects.
Avoid creating or breathing unnecessary dust while handling dry horticultural materials.
Store in a cool, dry place with the packaging securely closed when not in use.
Wash hands after handling and always follow the current safety and handling information printed on the product packaging.
