Plant Highlights: Distinctive bronze and mint-green foliage • Evergreen year-round interest • Mauve-purple summer flower spikes • Compact, bushy habit • Suitable for borders and containers

Overview

Hebe 'Mint Chocolate' is a compact evergreen shrub grown for its striking foliage, which combines fresh mint-green new growth with rich bronze and chocolate tones as the leaves mature. During summer, slender spikes of vivid mauve-purple flowers rise above the foliage, adding vibrant seasonal colour while attracting bees and other pollinating insects.

Its naturally rounded habit makes it an excellent choice for mixed borders, gravel gardens, coastal gardens and patio containers, where the colourful foliage provides structure and interest throughout the year. Typically reaching 75–100cm in height and spread, it is well suited to gardens where dependable evergreen colour is required without taking up excessive space.

Growing Guide

Position

Grow in full sun or partial shade in a sheltered position. It performs best where it receives good light and protection from cold, drying winds.

Watering

Water regularly while establishing, then only during prolonged dry spells. Container-grown plants may require more frequent watering during warm weather.

Soil

Plant in well-drained soil and avoid areas that remain wet during winter, as good drainage is essential for healthy growth.

Routine Care

Remove spent flower spikes after flowering to keep the plant tidy and encourage fresh growth. Light trimming in spring will help maintain its naturally compact, rounded shape.

Perfect For

• Mixed borders.
• Gravel gardens.
• Coastal gardens.
• Patio containers.
• Evergreen planting schemes.

Good to Know

The changing foliage colours are one of this variety's standout features, with mint-green young leaves gradually developing rich bronze and chocolate tones as they mature. In colder gardens, choose a sheltered, well-drained position to help protect the plant through winter.
