Overview

Growing Guide

Position

Plant in partial shade or dappled shade, where the foliage is protected from strong afternoon sun. It is well suited to woodland planting, shaded borders and sheltered patios.

Watering

Keep the soil evenly moist during the first growing season while the plant establishes. Once established, water during prolonged dry periods, particularly in containers.

Soil

Grow in fertile, humus-rich, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Avoid sites that remain waterlogged during winter.

Hardiness and Winter Care

Fully hardy throughout Ireland. Remove any old or damaged foliage in late winter before the flowers emerge to improve their display and encourage healthy new growth. Apply an annual mulch of compost or leaf mould around the crown.

Routine Care

Feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring after flowering. Hellebores prefer to remain undisturbed and gradually develop into larger clumps over time.
